Anderson Cooper Jeopardy Ratings Plummet Below Dr. Oz

Anderson Cooper might want to stick to CNN. The journalist had his turn hosting Jeopardy last month, but his gig on the iconic game show pulled in the fewest viewers out of any guest host so far. In his first week on Jeopardy, Cooper’s ratings fell 7%, dropping down to 5.1 — even worse than the controversial guest before him, Dr. Oz, The Wrap reports.

Despite massive fan backlash, the TV doctor locked in a 5.2 rating during his debut week, beating out Cooper in his first week hosting. But Dr. Oz’s ratings fell to a 5.1 total average across his two-week hosting gig, and ratings have not yet been released for Cooper’s second week, so there’s still a possibility his rating could increase when that data becomes available.

While Jeopardy typically secures the top game show spot, it faltered at No. 2 after Cooper’s slip in ratings, leaving Family Feud to claim the No. 1 spot with a 5.5 rating. But as The Wrap points out, it’s possible that week’s news could have contributed t Cooper’s dip in ratings. Since Jeopardy is syndicated, it airs at different times across the country; that week, the Derek Chauvin murder trial was taking place and the guilty verdict was announced April 20, when Cooper was still hosting.

Before Cooper took to the Jeopardy stage, NFL star Aaron Rodgers tested out his hosting skills, pulling in far higher ratings than the news anchor. Rodgers started off the week of April 5 with a 5.6, and saw a small sip in his second week, which brought in a 5.5.

So far, the most popular guest host is Jeopardy GOAT Ken Jennings. The game show alum began as the first guest host this year on Jan. 4, continuing through Feb. 19. In his first week hosting, Jennings’ ratings reached 6.2, dropping to 5.9 in his second week. After his time as host came to an end, Jeopardy welcomed executive producer Mike Richards, followed by Katie Couric.

Jeopardy has not announced an official successor for late host Alex Trebek, but the show has plenty of stars lined up to host in the coming months. 60 Minutes‘ Bill Whitaker is filling in this week and next, and will be followed by former Jeopardy champion Buzzy Cohen, The Big Bang Theory‘s Mayim Bialik, TODAY Show anchor Savannah Guthrie, CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta, and more. Head to the Jeopardy website to see the full guest host lineup.
