Woman claims her boyfriend of two years used COVID to ghost her

A woman has claimed that her boyfriend of two years told her he had COVID and then disappeared, leading her to discover that he had been using a fake name their entire relationship.

Kathryn Ver Brugge, 30, from New York, stunned TikTok with her story when she responded to a viral video asking: ‘What is the worst way you’ve ever been ghosted?’

‘Oh this sound was made for me. I was with a man for two years, and I thought I was going to marry him, have his babies, and spend the rest of our lives together,’ she explained.

‘But then COVID hit and he unfortunately told me that he thought he had it. He said he was thinking about going to the hospital because he felt so bad, then miraculously he was starting to feel better.’

Kathryn said she never heard from him again after that, and she started to worry he was being hospitalized with COVID or possibly dead.

‘He suddenly stopped responding to all my calls, all my texts,’ she recalled. ‘A week later, his phone went right to voicemail. I freaked out. I started calling the hospital thinking maybe something happened and he’s at the hospital. He wasn’t there.

‘I called all the hospitals in the area and he wasn’t there. I called the police and filed a missing persons report, and you know what they told me? They told me my boyfriend did not exist.

‘So not only did my boyfriend ghost me by faking his own death, he also had lied to me for two years about his real identity.’

Kathryn’s video has been viewed more than 2.8 million times and has received thousands of comments ranging from sympathetic to judgmental.

‘100 percent chance he was married. Then had to work from home,’ one person deduced, while another wrote: ‘Probably married…stay at home order…can’t hide it.’

‘So he lied about his name, but you need to stay positive, maybe he did die,’ someone else shared.

Kathryn had actually opened up about the situation in a series of videos last year, and she revealed in the comments that she now knows his real name, but she didn’t feel comfortable sharing it.

In the clips, she explained how she met her ex on a dating app when they were both living in Honolulu, Hawaii, in the summer of 2018. He told her his name was William James Khan (pronounced Khan) and went by Will — as in Will Khan.

‘I am highly aware of the irony of that last name,’ she noted.

Kathryn said they chatted on the app for a few weeks and then met in person in June 2018. While they ‘hit it off,’ he told her he was busy with work and didn’t have too much time to meet up with her — the first red flag in their relationship.

She wasn’t concerned at the time because she wasn’t looking for anything serious either, but then she quickly fell in love with him. They would meet once a week, and she insisted he was the ‘best lover’ she had ever had, which clouded her judgment.

‘Because I was so in love, I easily ignored all of the obvious red flags that are very apparent to me looking back,’ she admitted, saying they only met at hotels.

He claimed he had a roommate who had a child, and he didn’t want the kid to hear them having sex. Kathryn also had roommates at the time and accepted the explanation.

Will also said he didn’t have social media, and she never met any of his friends or family the two years that they dated.

Kathryn recalled how he gave her a beautiful peacock feather one day and told her this romantic story about how he found it and wanted to give it to the most beautiful woman he knew.

‘I was so touched,’ she said.

But then a few weeks later, he gave her another peacock feather and told her the same exact story — another red flag.

When they celebrated her birthday that year, he told her he had a really romantic and sentimental gift for her, but he was afraid it would scare her off because they had just started dating.

‘Would you like to guess if I ever saw that present or not?’ she asked: ‘Spoiler alert: You’ll find there are a lot of things that Will says that never happen.’

By September 2018, she told Will she was falling for him, and he said he loved her. Right after they exchanged ‘I love yous,’ he told her his mom was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and he had to move back to New Jersey.

Kathryn admitted she ended up cheating on him, and she was grateful that he wanted to keep seeing her because he had acted really hurt and upset by her betrayal.

She started traveling to New York City once a month, and he would put her up in a hotel for all of their rendezvous. She kept telling him she wanted to meet his mom and family and friends, but he always had an excuse as to why she couldn’t.

While she started to get frustrated by the fact that he would never keep his plans with her, she thought he was just stressed because of his sick mother.

They started talking about getting married, having kids, and building their lives together in 2019, but that summer he’d go a week without texting her and would never call.

Kathryn’s friends warned her that he was ‘probably cheating’ on her or married with a ‘family he wasn’t telling her about.’

‘The truth is I just didn’t want to believe it,’ she said. ‘I couldn’t understand how this love could be fake.

Will then told her that his dad had tuberculosis. When they finally saw each other, he claimed he had been struggling with depression all summer. Any time she would question his behavior, he would tell her he was having a hard time.

Kathryn moved to New York City to be with him in 2020, but she still didn’t see him very often. On March 31, 2020, he told her had a high fever and a bad cough, saying he thought he might have contracted COVID-19 from his brother.

Every time she offered to bring him medicine, he would ignore her. He stopped answering her phone calls and texts on April 12, 2020. Worried that he was seriously ill, she called every hospital in New Jersey looking for him, but there was no William Khan at any of them.

Kathryn started getting suspicious and began searching for him online, trying everything from tax records to reverse photo searches. She filed a missing persons report in May 2020 and was told the man she was in love with did not exist.

She noted in one of her videos that she felt vulnerable telling her story because a number of people have victim-blamed her and asked her how she could let this happen to herself.

‘Trust me, I was thinking the exact same thing,’ she said. ‘I have my degree in psychology and I am highly aware of human behavior, yet here I am.

‘Some people on the first video were saying, “Just let it go!” And trust me. I’m usually very quick to move on; however, not only is this cathartic for me, but I also feel compelled to speak out about it,’ she continued.

‘Most importantly, as an empathetic, trusting human being, I think it’s important that people like myself speak out against people who try to take advantage of people like us.

‘I am sharing all of my pain in the last two years in hopes that someone watching can be aware of the red flags and avoid my mistakes. You deserve to be happy and treated with respect.’

Kathryn believes Will is a sociopath and was mimicking and manipulating her emotions their entire relationship, but she noted there was a benefit to that.

‘In processing all of this, I’ve realized something pretty cool. Will always reflected what I was giving to him, so in essence I was able to experience what it was like to love myself,’ she said. ‘He would always follow my lead in the depth and speed of our relationship, which means whatever I gave, I got right back.’
